Jeep Grand Cherokee Transmission Fluid Capacity

- 1993-1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee: 5.2L V8 engine – 6 quarts
- 1999-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee: 4.0L 6-cylinder engine – 5 quarts

Checking the Transmission Fluid Level
- Park the vehicle on a level surface.
- Turn off the engine.
- Open the hood.
- Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. The dipstick is usually located on the driver’s side of the engine compartment, near the back of the engine.
- Pull the dipstick out and wipe it clean.
- Reinsert the dipstick into the transmission fluid tube.
- Pull the dipstick out again and check the fluid level.
The fluid level should be between the “Full” and “Add” marks on the dipstick.
Adding Transmission Fluid
- If the transmission fluid level is low, you will need to add fluid.
- Use a funnel to add fluid to the transmission fluid tube.
- Add fluid until the level reaches the “Full” mark on the dipstick.
- Do not overfill the transmission.
Changing the Transmission Fluid
The transmission fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles or 2 years, whichever comes first.
To change the transmission fluid, you will need:
- A new transmission fluid filter
- New transmission fluid
- A funnel
- A wrench
- A drain pan
- Park the vehicle on a level surface.
- Turn off the engine.
- Open the hood.
- Locate the transmission fluid drain plug. The drain plug is usually located on the bottom of the transmission.
- Place the drain pan under the drain plug.
- Use the wrench to loosen the drain plug.
- Allow the transmission fluid to drain out completely.
- Once the transmission fluid has drained out, replace the drain plug.
- Locate the transmission fluid filter. The filter is usually located near the transmission fluid drain plug.
- Use the wrench to loosen the filter.
- Remove the old filter and replace it with the new filter.
- Add new transmission fluid to the transmission fluid tube.
- Add fluid until the level reaches the “Full” mark on the dipstick.
- Do not overfill the transmission.
